 UUCC Weekly Announcements

Hello everyone,

This Sunday, February 19, the service will be led by Rev. Cassandra Howe and is titled “Vow of Non-Violence”.  The first vow of non-violence was created by Mahatma Gandhi in Johannesburg, South Africa on September 11 1906.  As a religious community that seeks justice and peace for all beings, we are part of a long line of people who, individually and in community, have helped to shape our culture towards peace.  Come be part of the signing of our peace vow, as a witness or participant, and hear the sounds of our peace maker choir!

Hope you can make it,

Jessie Belland

One Day Choir:  The kids and adult choirs will practice on Saturday, February 18 at 4 p.m.   We will also do a pre-service run through at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 19.  Please come along if you would like to add your voice to our song.  Contact Miriam (dre@uucommunitychurch.org or 343-9095) if you have any questions.

Loaves and Fishes Food Drive:  Our food drive for Loaves and Fishes ends this Sunday.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  We will be taking our food donations as well as the funds we collected during our Generosity Sunday collections in January and February to Loaves and Fishes on February 24 at 11:00.  If you would like to come along and get a tour of the new warehouse facilities and help sort food, please add your name to the sign up sheet on the table by the RE bulletin board at the back of the sanctuary.

Program Council Lunch:  The youth will be servicing lunch immediately after the worship service this Sunday.  All are welcome.  PC Lunch is a monthly fundraiser for the Youth Group as they work to raise money for their trip to NY and NJ this spring so please be sure to put a donation in the basket.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Adult OWL:  People's Church will be offering Our Whole Lives for Adults, a sexuality education class designed to allow adults of all ages to build understanding of healthy sexual relationships, affirm diversity and  to help participants accept and affirm their own sexuality throughout their lives, on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. beginning on February 15. Session Topics include: Sexuality & Values, Sexuality & Communication, Sexuality & Spirituality, Sexual Attraction, Sexual Diversity, Sexuality & Aging, Sexual Health, Sexuality & Family Discovering the Sexual Self, Experiencing the Sexual Other. Generosity Sunday for March and April -
 Support of Local Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood offers a variety of reproductive health care services for both women and men.  The majority of clients visit Planned Parenthood for help with a birth control method.  Among the other services offered are annual exams and health counseling, pregnancy testing, lifesaving cancer screening, testing and treatment of STDs, medical and surgical abortions, and surgical sterilizations for both women and men.  Many of these services are provided at reduced cost, according to the income level of the client.
Planned Parenthood also provides medically accurate, age-appropriate, comprehensive sexuality education, training programs, and resources which teach an understanding of sexual and reproductive health and responsible decision-making.
At the beginning of 2012, our local Planned Parenthood became part of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan, headquartered in Ann Arbor, and is now abbreviated PPMSM.  This change in management will not change the valuable reproductive health care services provided locally.  Our Generosity Sunday gifts will be earmarked for the local clinic.
All loose cash and change in the offering baskets, along with checks written to UUCC with “Generosity Sunday” in the memo line, are given to the organization.

• With Program Council, hold at least 7 Generosity Sundays, 4 of which benefit area charitable nonprofit organizations.
• With Rev. Cassie Howe, collect donations for the UU Service Committee via the Guest at Your Table campaign usually November-January).
   > Social Justice Efforts
• With Program Council funding(?), pay ISAAC dues for UUCC.
• Send at least 2 UUCC representatives to the monthly ISAAC planning meetings.
• Conduct the ISAAC listening campaign at UUCC so we can contribute to the selection of ISAAC issues for 2012.
• With Program Council, hold at least 7 Generosity Sundays, 3 of which benefit area social justice efforts.

• Hold forums on education reform (internal forum planned for 9/25; public forum tbd).
Possible Roles for UUCC Board
• Help identify a source for ISAAC dues that does not deplete the Program Council budget
• Help promote UUCC involvement in UU and interfaith activities - urge individuals to engage as members of UUCC, rather than as unaffiliated individuals (give UUCC credit for the involvement).
• Help calm concerns some have about conducting Generosity Sundays. Faith in Action regards them as beneficial for UUCC as a congregation and to UUCC members individually.

What are you doing for your summer vacation?
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if everyone in the world had an attitude of open-mindedness, tolerance, concern for the planet, and support for each other that UUs do?  For one week each summer, we experience such a world.  That world is MUUSA!
Join us on Sunday, July 1st to Saturday, July 7th at MUUSA, the Midwest Unitarian Universalist Summer Assembly, where you can vacation with other Unitarian Universalists in a beautiful natural setting with activities and fun for all ages.  We invite families, singles, and couples to join us at our inter-generational retreat, where you can enjoy workshops, classes, and leisure time.  We gather at Trout Lodge, located in 5,200 acres of pine and oak forest on a private 360 acre lake 75 miles southwest of St. Louis, Missouri, near Potosi.
Save the date now and make your summer vacation planning easy.  The 2012 theme, “Living Once Upon a Time: the Stories Deep Within Us,” will be led by Reverend Keith Kron.  Your stay includes three buffet meals a day, comfortable housing, relaxing at the beachfront, watercraft use, opportunities for horseback riding, creating in the arts and crafts center, your choice of morning and afternoon workshops, and much, much more!
We offer a nursery and day camps for our youngest campers and unique program with separate housing for our junior high and senior high youths.  Our campers rave about MUUSA!  To hear more, visit YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNWMdbrjxuE and view our video to see what a week at MUUSA is like.   You can register today at www.muusa.org.  Have questions?  Contact Susan Porter, Registrar at muusa@uusa.org.  We can’t wait to welcome you to the most fabulous week of the year!
Remember, save the date:  Sunday, July 1st to Saturday, July 7th, 2012.

Please remember:  Jessie will not be in the office this Friday (the 17th).  Thank you for understanding!
